transsexual is a person who psychologically and emotional feels they belong to the opposite sex.
transgender is identifying with a gender opposite their biological one.
Why all the definitions?
Well I just finished watching Transparent, an original series on Amazon Prime.
Jeffrey Tambor plays the patriarch of the family who has lived for too many years dressed as a man, when he really wants to dress as a woman. The series then follows the lives of his grown children and his ex wife as they learn and follow him through his journey. Interesting individual characters and wonderful family dynamics.
It was really intriguing and I was hooked almost immediately. The wonderful plus is that there are only 10 episodes, each 30 minutes long, so if you do binge watch (which I did) it doesn't take THAT much time out of your life.
So if you have Amazon Prime and you like pushing the boundaries, this is for you.
So back to my definitions, Tambor's character is transgender. The difference between that and transsexual still mystifies me, but the title Transparent is a double entendre. To be transparent is to allow something to be distinctly seen. Tambor's character is a parent going through a transition and truly wants to be seen as he has felt internally for years. A parent in transition. A novel premise.
